Introduction
If you are enrolling a
child in Kindermusik or your child is a private lesson
student, we wish to welcome your family to Music Education at
Purple Possibilities! Music Studio. Your choice to experience
music education with your child will be an exciting – yet
sometimes difficult journey – and we promise you it will be
a journey with rich rewards for you and your child! This
handbook was carefully designed to allow you to know how we
can serve your family best. It clearly outlines our approach
to music education for your child. No matter the age of your
child or the specific involvement, it’s very important that
you read this handbook in its entirety and please keep handy
for your reference.
Studio
Mission Statement
Our highest objective is to empower parents to empower
their children with music education! It is thrilling to be
part of helping young children become confident, eager
learners with essential learning skills in place, while
introducing them to the wonders and joys of music! Our goals
go so much deeper at
PURPLE POSSiBiLiTiES
Music Studio
than just exposing
the children to music. We care very deeply that children have
all the advantages music can offer them. We firmly believe that
any child can learn to develop a high level of musical skills,
given the opportunity, exposure and necessary parental
support. We also believe that every child will benefit richly
from the inclusion of music education.
Our Kindermusik classroom instruction, and our private
instrumental instruction are conducted as a triangle; parent,
child, and teacher. We are a team and together we aim to empower
the child with solid skills within all the learning domains,
cognitive, language/literacy, social, emotional as well as
musical. Our goal at
PURPLE
POSSiBiLiTiES Music
Studio is to prepare
your child for academic success and enjoyment through music
education. We teach the children to learn -- and to love the
process of learning --rather than just focusing entirely on a
given outcome. You will find that everything your child is
exposed to at PP is clearly designed to encourage our students
to become life-long learners!
Our PURPLE
POSSiBiLiTiES
families have expressed often that they are thrilled to have
the support and backing needed to get their children grounded
in music, as well as grounded in the skills that will prepare
them for optimum success in school and life. We are here to
serve and empower each one of you as you learn more and more
how to empower your children with music education. We are here
to grow the children in the Roanoke and surrounding areas, one
child, one voice, and one future at a time.

Parental
Support and Involvement
in Music Education
It's our
privilege and responsibility to support mom and dad as they
make, and continue to make, a commitment to music education.
At PURPLE
POSSiBiLiTiES we
know that parents welcome support as they strive to fully
appreciate the importance and long-term value of music
education for their child. It is our joy to share in the
realization of the overwhelming benefits to the child's
academic experience, as together we tap into the child's
optimum learning potential with music education. We realize
that a commitment to music education may compete with
sporting or other activities that have plenty of immediate
gratification for both the child and the parent. We
sincerely applaud our parents for choosing wisely and with
long-term goals in mind. We are convinced that learning to
value and appreciate music education together as a family
will be life changing!

Parental
Agreement
for PP Private Lessons
& Stringz Ensembles Families
Dear Parents, We strive to provide a truly
unique approach to music enrichment that is a complete
and purposeful program for your child. But it's your
continued parental commitment that ensures your child a
positive, rich, and continually growing experience at
PP! We believe that together we can make a profound
difference in your child's life! However, if the
responsibilities as outlined here in the Parental
Agreement, which are also found on the 07-08
registration form, in the handbook and on the website,
require more than your family can commit to, we will
respect your decision and will provide referrals. Please
feel free to discuss anything with us. We want to thank
our PP families for embracing the spirit of our program
and for understanding our sincere desire for the
continued growth of your children. Sincerely, Debra
Bassett
Please note: Enrolling your child in PP Lessons
and Ensembles signifies that you agree to abide by the
following:
1. The parent is required to attend each private
lesson weekly to take notes, through at least year 3 of
instruction at PP, longer if child is very young.
2. Parent is also responsible to practice with child
at home, the length of the child's lesson, 5 or 6 times
weekly. (See handbook)
3. All private lesson students 7 & up are
required to participate in a PP string ensemble and to
attend each week without exception.
Each student needs to attend his/her ensemble
consistently each week, as we develop important
character traits of respect for authority, as well as
commitment, accountability and responsible teamwork.
Thank you for your continued cooperation!
4. Private lesson / ensemble students are required
to participate in one recital, and possibly a second
opportunity to perform for the public, per semester.
Cooperation and ensemble team member support sincerely
appreciated from families. Providing advance notice of
performance dates will be a priority.
5. Out of sincere respect for the majority of PP
families already in compliance with the PP Studio
attendance policies please note:
As of December 1st, 2007, sports or other
outside commitments may not circumvent the commitment
made to the ensemble group for weekly rehearsal and
recital attendance, or the attendance of both parent and
child at the student's private lesson. Failure to comply
will result in dismissal from program. PP Music
Studio will continue to accept absences for illness or a
death in the family. Note: Occasionally
events occur within families such as a birth, a
long-term illness, or other that may require someone
else to bring your child to lessons for a few weeks in
your place, or for absence. Please feel free to discuss
these unusual circumstances with us. If at all possible,
consistency with your child's music program during a
family crisis will provide a surprising amount of
comfort for your child. Please be assured that we'll do
all we can to help during this time.
6. We understand you are busy! We
provide advance notice of the school year calendar in
July or August, prior to the first semester of a given
school year, to facilitate planning for required
parental participation and required student attendance
in lessons and ensembles.
7. We'll support you and your child with our
very best. Please make sure your child's weekly
schedule is conducive to assuring success within our
music program. If a child has too many other demands on
his / her time that are interfering, we reserve the
option of suggesting that changes are made.
8. Communication with families will be primarily
by e-mail therefore habitual daily checking is
essential.
9. Ensembles open only to PP Private Lesson students
at this time.
10. All private lesson students under 7 years of age
are required to regularly attend Kindermusik classes and
are welcome to participate in the appropriate ensemble
as well.

Sustaining
Your Child’s Interest in Music Education
It is our commitment to you to provide continuing
developmental support for your child through our Kindermusik
classes and or String Ensembles and our children’s Korus .
These will provide essential learning opportunities
that will lay a solid musical foundational for your child.
We are convinced that you’ll find that your child’s
participation in any or all of these opportunities will
provide your child with a wholesome, exciting and compelling
social element to their music education.
We realize that parents often experience periods when their
child thinks his or her schoolwork is a major chore. We
realize that as parents, they understand the purpose behind
completing it -- even though the child may not be very
interested at the moment. We believe that, just like with
schoolwork, it is up to the parent to decide that
continuing with music education is worth their child's time,
even when she looses interest periodically. Loosing
interest from time to time will happen, as you know, with anything
we put our children into and it is clearly a normal part
of your child's natural learning cycle. We are here to support
parents as we ask them to make a solid commitment to music
education and to consistently weather the, "I don't like
it!" weeks and get over to the, "Wow! I'm really
playing (or singing) that!" weeks.
As a parent you realize
that when a child is loosing interest or repeatedly grumbles
about practicing or about music attendance, it is often in reality
a subtle question to the parent from the child, "Do you
think we should keep doing this?" We have found that our
most successful studio students have committed parents that
are willing to stand their ground and affirm to their child
again and again, "Yes, this is something we do, just
like your school work." And this we believe is the
key -- the real key to unlocking all the amazing
potential music has to offer your child. Research supports us
when we say that the consistent inclusion of music education
throughout your child's academic life will optimize your
child's overall learning potential. And at PP we sincerely
believe that persevering with music instruction will
create greater depth of character for your child, as well.

Character
Development
We believe that character development begins at home and we
are here to empower mom and dad as they encourage and support
routine practice, and expect accountability from their child.
Character development is a major focus at PURPLE
POSSiBiLiTiES as
we genuinely believe that the character is defined and
influenced greatly by music education. Music students develop
accountability, reliability, integrity, and a sense of
responsibility. The children work towards an age appropriate
goal such as being ready for a recital, learning the movements
and words to a specific classroom song, or mastering the
glockenspiel mallet procedures in Young Child, all the while
learning to take a task and break it down into manageable
chunks. Step by step they grow while learning to enjoy the
learning process.
Each semester the private lesson students and the Muzikidz
Korus, Toad’ly Tuned Stringz, and Klassikal Kidz Orkestra
are given the opportunity to share with parents and
friends at our Recital & Celebration of Learning. Children
are taught at our studio, that music isn't about a "look
at me" kind of attitude. Rather, we encourage them to
understand that music is their unique gift to be shared and
that each child brings their own special voice to it. Each
opportunity to play for an audience is an opportunity to share
our music as a gift given to the audience--and they are
the only one that can bring that specific gift! We are
thrilled to celebrate with the children, as they learn and
accomplish wonderful things, and we have not had any problems
with stage fright with this liberating approach! As you know,
stage fright is all about "look at me" -- music
is simply a gift to be shared. Music education influences
all aspects of your child's developing character and even
their peer groups will change as they begin to grow into
student ensembles within our studio and the community. We are
delighted to work with area professionals to provide sound,
unbiased opportunities in which our children will learn to
respectfully and responsibly support each other with their
time and talents.
(back

Musical
Involvement Policy
Your child's personal musical growth is our
first concern, and at any given time your instructor may
encourage more focus on individual growth and ask you to
exclude participation in an outside musical program. We ask
that any musical involvement outside the studio be discussed
with your instructor. We have experience with many of the area
programs and your instructor and / or studio director will
help you assess the potential value for your child. Your
instructor has your child's best interests in mind, and should
she or he feel that any outside programs are interfering with
musical growth or would provide an unsuitable experience, we
ask that you respectfully work with your instructor. Together
with area professionals, we will do our best to provide
quality, fair and appropriate ensemble experiences for your
children, as they are ready.

Private
Instrumental Lessons at Purple Possibilities!
It is our privilege to offer your family private
instrumental instruction at affordable rates with our
Student-Instructors. We currently offer private violin, viola
and harp instruction at our studio at the rate of $25 per half
hour. The wonderful professionals in our areas charge $45-$70
per hour and unfortunately many will not start beginning
students. Music stores throughout the region tell families
that they must wait to begin lessons until 7 or 8 years of
age or older, yet, professionals rarely want to start even a
beginner at this age. We firmly believe that music is a
language and that the brains of infants up to age 8 or 9 are
especially geared towards the acquisition of language. We just
slip in another language to learn – music! Research supports
our approach - the earlier the better!
Your private lesson instructors are also solo and ensemble
performers of very high caliber, and as such have demanding
schedules and can only offer a minimum of lessons slots per
week, per semester. Careful planning and thoughtful
preparation for your child's needs are put into place at each
lesson. We purpose to ensure your child the most empowering,
and successful private instrumental training possible. With
this in mind, it is our policy that attendance of lessons
be consistent, with a parent present in each lesson.
It is essential that the parent take notes in a specific
practice log, in order to support the child's learning in the
role of at-home-coach during daily practice sessions. We
suggest that you and your child practice first thing in the
morning. Your child's academic day will soar! These daily
practices are to be the length of your child's private lesson,
5 days a week. Your private lesson Instructor in tandem with
the Kindermusik classroom instruction will support you quite
well in the role of home coach. Please ask any and all
questions of your instructor, in order to provide you with
whatever level of information needed to feel comfortable and
knowledgeable as you grow into your role as your child's home
music coach. We are here to empower you to empower year child!
(The practice log is available for purchase by our studio
families of a local music store of our request. See or email
your instructor for details, ASAP.)

Private
Lesson Guidelines
Your
private lesson instructor and studio director truly care about
your child and that your child has an exceptional musical
experience! We all
work very hard to coordinate calendars, lesson schedules and
recital preparations along with the semester recital and
reception itself, to present to you and your child our very
best at PP. All of the guidelines as stated below and in the
student handbook are designed to serve you and your child to
the optimum outcome.
As
stated in the Studio Handbook all parents are required to
attend each private lesson with their child, taking an active
role in his learning. We reserve the right to discontinue
teaching a student if a parent is unwilling or unable to
attend lessons on a consistent basis.
As you know, private instrumental students will be required to
learn to match pitch vocally, developing his ear by singing
the instrument repertoire. They will learn to read music,
singing off the musical staff, which enhances the musical
learning process. During lessons all students are expected to
participate fully in the instruction as deemed appropriate for
the individual learning needs of the student.
Regular parent led home practice is essential and fully
expected as outlined in the Studio Handbook. Parents are
expected to reinforce proper posture and correct playing
techniques in the home practice, as observed and understood
from their own participation in the private lesson. Parents
are welcome to ask the instructor any questions needed in
order to be clear on what is to be presented to, or covered by
the child at home.
Private
lesson students are required to participate in a studio string
group (instructor will advise which group) as soon as deemed
ready by the instructor.
Occasionally a student has a need
for more in-depth ear training than there is time to cover in
the private lesson, and the instructor may insist that the
student enroll in an additional class or course to enhance
essential ear training. The options would be the studio Korus
or another choral group, a studio Kindermusik Young Child
class, or the student could take voice lessons from an
approved instructor.

foundation of valuable pre-orchestral skills. Required of
all PP private instrumental

music at the Fall and Spring Recitals! Orkestra

Student
Recitals
Each semester there will be a
student recital with a reception following for the entire
studio family and guests. You will be informed of the date
and time of the recital at the beginning of the semester and
it is very
important
that each family at Purple Possibilities designates
this recital date as a family priority. In doing so you
will be modeling and expressing to your children the value of
music education and you will be in a position of shared
support for one another on this incredibly exciting journey!
For those of you with children participating in the recital,
making this day a priority will show your support for your
child's musical learning in a very genuine way. The recital is
their night to share with the audience, not
to perform, and we look to parents
to be positive and to encourage their child to simply
"have fun with their music" as they share with
us the exciting music and learning they have accomplished this
semester.
Recital
Participation: Regular Private Lesson
Attendance and one or two practices with a pianist will be
required. Please remember to coordinate your child’s recital
practices with the pianist, with your instructor.
Concert Attire: As
we strive to set a positive tone for your child’s musical
experiences while giving the children the respect due young
musicians, we will require Concert Dress for recitals. Concert
Dress will be clearly defined before each recital in writing,
and your cooperation is valued. Please honor your children as
they honor you, by also dressing up for their very special
evening.
A Night to Remember:
A few weeks prior to the recital, you will be asked to sign up
to bring some refreshments and to choose how you’d like to
help, such as setting up, serving or putting things away.

Private
Lesson Cancellation Policy
Occasionally, one or more of the instructor's
performance schedules may require a week off from Private
Lesson teaching. We will post any 'off weeks' in advance on
the studio message board in the entry hall and also on the
website, along with information regarding your instructor's
performances. Checking the website before coming to the studio
each week would be a great habit to get into, and you are
likely to find extra things your teacher wanted you to know
before coming!
Most Roanoke area programs for private
instrumental instruction require payment by the month or by
the semester and do not offer refunds should you miss a lesson
or should you decide to withdraw your child. Your private
lesson instructors have made a genuine commitment of time and
planning for you and your child. Please bring your child to
every lesson unless your child has a fever and please give
your Instructor twenty-four hour notice, or payment is
expected. If your child is ill, you are welcome to take a
lesson in their place. Your child's lesson slot has been
held for them and others potentially turned away that needed
lessons at that time. In light of this, should you withdraw
your child from private lesson instruction for any reason
during the semester there will be a 3 week Withdrawal Fee
required, and we reserve the option of giving away your
child’s lesson slot away immediately upon notification of
withdrawal.

Exposing
Your Child To Classical Music
You and your child are encouraged to attend
our private Instructor's performances. We can't stress
attending quality performances enough and we will also
continue to provide information through the studio, regarding
quality musical performances we feel beneficial for your
child. We believe that seeing music performed will most
likely be profoundly influential. We highly recommend the
world renowned Kandinsky Piano Trio Performances. The Trio
members are Artist's in Residence of Roanoke College, teach in
our community and tour worldwide. We are very fortunate to
have them in our area.
Young children are blessed with a natural
need/compulsion to move and it actually works to help
solidify the learning going on within their brains! While
taking them to musical performances is very important, we want
to avoid having them misinterpret their honest need to wiggle,
as boredom with the music. Please understand that children
under 6 should only be required to sit for 20 or maybe 30
minutes at best! Try leaving the auditorium (between songs
only!) and allowing your child to quietly hop, jump, skip in
the halfway for several minutes, (don't mind any scowling
grandmas...they'll get over it!) A regular bathroom and drink
break will also help. A coloring book, and 4 or 5 crayons in
dad's pocket, is a great idea to allow them to watch while
their hands are moving. We'll make information available for
your family regarding quality performances in our area
periodically at the studio and on the web site.
The library is a great source for recorded
classical music for children and we encourage you
to tap into it! Ask your librarian for suggestions and we will
be making a listening list available to our studio families.
Research shows that having National Public Radio and other
classical stations on in the car (before 4 pm) and in the home
at least a little every day will empower your child in all his
or her learning! Plus everyone will come to appreciate and
truly enjoy classical music; some more than others, and
listening is the place to start. Fold laundry, take baths, eat
dinner, and drive to some classical music every day. Soon,
very soon, your child will be able to play / sing / hum some
classical repertoire and something amazing will happen .......
it will begin to sound wonderful to your amazed parent ears.
And as your child's abilities grow in classical instruction,
you'll find you are truly becoming your child's number one
classical music fan!

Learning
Goals for Our Kindermusik and Purple Possibilities! Children
-
Working together
with parents to develop within the child a willing,
age-appropriate ability to direct and sustain attention.
-
To foster a
genuine love and delight in the process of learning,
while creating a joyful pressure-free learning
environment for all our learners.
-
To encourage within the child the desire
for genuine bonding and interaction with the parent,
in and out of the classroom.
K indermusik
International is
almost 30 years old and yet the curriculum is always relevant
utilizing current research in early childhood education and
the latest scientific findings regarding how the brains of
infants and young children learn best. The musical content of
the program is extremely sound and powerful, beginning with
the classes for newborns up through the Young Child classes.
Yet it's the integrated approach to learning within the
Kindermusik curricula that excites us the most! Even in the
earliest classes, the skill of genuine listening (a
purposeful, cognitive skill) rather than merely hearing (a
physical act) is taught and stressed. Your child is provided
many opportunities to practice this essential learning skill
in the classroom and at home. We firmly believe that by
teaching children how to listen and by giving them a
clear purpose in doing so, there will be far fewer school
children labeled with ADD. And helping parents to listen in
this way and to model, teach and expect it at home is
extremely empowering for the children and for their futures!
We also strive to empower very young children with inhibitory
skills, self-control, and in combination with above listening
skills, hope to avoid issues for the child relating to ADHD.
The Kindermusik curriculum gives our classroom instructors
specific tools to help parents to know how their child learns
best. And it provides parental information regarding the
long-term value of the inclusion of music education for their
children.
The
following shows you how teachers at PP are applying the
Kindermusik curricula to truly optimize your child’s
learning potential.

Consistency in attendance is
essential to your child’s overall benefit from Kindermusik
and other studio programs. Come to every session unless
your child has a fever. We cannot offer make-ups unless there
is room in an alternate class. With small classes the
Kindermusik and studio program spaces are given and held for
your child at enrollment. A great deal of planning and
preparation goes into session with your child in mind. Tuition
refunds will only be given if you are moving out of the area
or if you have a death in the family that requires that you be
out for several weeks. We reserve the option of giving your
